In recognition of his unwavering dedication to sustainable tourism, conservation, and destination management in East Africa, Tony Ofungi is hereby honoured as the 2025 Global Tourism Resilience Champion.

A visionary leader and second-generation tourism professional, Tony Ofungi has played a pivotal role in shaping East Africa’s travel industry through his company, Maleng Travel, a premier Destination Management Company (DMC) for East Africa, headquartered in Kampala, Uganda. Since its incorporation in 2008, Maleng Travel has been at the forefront of providing seamless, bespoke travel experiences that highlight the region’s wildlife, landscapes, people, and culture—all while championing sustainability and conservation.

With a solid academic background from Makerere University, the International Tourism Management Institute in Salzburg, Austria, and further conservation training from SUNx Malta and the Dutch-Centre for the Promotion of Exports (CBI), Tony has continuously reinforced his expertise in sustainable tourism. His remarkable journey in tourism includes being part of the Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom opening team in 1998, a testament to his deep-rooted passion for wildlife and conservation-driven tourism.

As a former key player at the Uganda Tourism Board, Tony was instrumental in securing major international accolades for Uganda, including securing stand space at BIT Milan Expo and submitting an award-winning short film at the Brazil International Tourism Festival, which clinched second place.

Beyond business, Tony is a thought leader and correspondent for eTurboNews (ETN), where he shares valuable insights on tourism trends and resilience strategies. His membership and leadership roles in various conservation-focused organizations, including the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO), African Tourism Board, World Travel Network (WTN), Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA), Association for the Conservation of Bugoma Forest (ACBF), and Nature Uganda, demonstrate his steadfast commitment to sustainable travel and community engagement.

As a Chapter Leader for the Climate Friendly Travel Network, Tony aligns his work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris 1.5-degree net zero targets, advocating for best practices in climate-conscious tourism.
